Aizawl: State Election Commission Pu C. Ropianga yesterday announced the Schedule for the first general election to the Aizawl Municipal Council (AMC).
According to the Schedule, notification calling all Municipal Wards to elect Councillors to the Aizawl Municipal Council will be issued on the 4th October 2010.Thereafter, nominations can be filed by candidates till 11th October 2010.
The nominations will be scrutinised on12th October and the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be 14th October.
The election date has been fixed on Wednesday, the 3rd November 2010, from 7:30 AM in the morning to 4:00 PM in the evening; votes will be counted on next day, the 4th November.
The entire election process shall be completed before 16th November 2010, according to the Schedule.
Aizawl Municipal Council has 19 Wards, out of which 6 have been reserved for women. The total number of voters stands at 1,68,649; 80,390 males and 88,259 females within 174 Polling Stations.
In her convocation address to the Mizoram University here today President Pratibha Patil lauded the University for its high traditions, and said she was glad to know that the university was free from the menace of ragging.
"It is encouraging that older students welcome the new students and help them settle down. This is also a tribute to the Mizo moral code of Tlawmngaihna which imposes an obligation on all member of society to be hospitable, kind, unselfish and helpful to others," she said.
During the convocation, President Patil awarded gold medals to 27 post graduate and graduate students.
Patil also asked the boys of the varsity to work towards increasing their numbers in the medals tally.
"I see more girls than boys being awarded medals, although it is a good thing but boys should not lag behind," said President Patil.

The “villagers” said Guinness Book of World Records officials recently tried to put Ziona into their records for getting married the highest number of women. But the effort went in vain because he refused to pose for a photograph.
